Nicely done, Richelle Mead! A great teen vampire book. This story is written from a first person perspective from a teenage girl, named Rose. Rose is a dhampir (half vampire) and has assumed herself as a guardian to her best friend, Lissa. Lissa is of royal lineage in a vampire hierarchy system. The book starts with them having run away from the school they were raised at. but straight from the beginning they are forced back to the Academy. This is a special school for dhampirs and vampires. Rose is sassy and tries to act tough but is always trying to look out for her friend, with whom she has a special and rare bond. Lissa is being tormented by a mysterious person who keeps leaving her dead animals and seems to know a bit too much about Lissa's past for comfort. Both girls are behind on their studies and also are caught in some horrible social games.
This story has all teen high school drama. Gossip, crushes, relationships, parties and more. Richelle Mead did a great job writing this. I loved reading in from Rose's perspective. Not to mention her growth as a character. The culture was nicely explained throughout the book as well. A bit mature possible on language and sexual content for the younger teen or preteen, but great for the older teen, young adult. Even adults can enjoy this book for its story. So long as they can handle the high school drama flashbacks.
I love that series!I agree it doesn't fit for younger readers(although they read it anyways)
ReplyDeleteYeah, the 'Young Adult' genre has really blurred the lines. 'New Adult' I fear may do the same.
DeleteI've heard great things about this series. I really, really need to start reading it. Great review!
ReplyDeleteIt is a well worthwhile series. I was surprise how much I have enjoyed it. Richelle Mead is one author I keep enjoying with her other series' now.
DeleteIt sounds interesting. I've never actually read this yet, but I've heard a lot about it. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI held off for a long time but once I started I loved this series!
DeleteGreat review!!! I read this book awhile back and enjoyed it!! I also cant wait til the movie comes out too-im hoping it goes by the way the book does!
ReplyDeleteI hope the movie does although the trailer has me very skeptical.
DeleteI really want to read this, especially since the movie is out. I have this rule that I can't watch the movie unless I read the book. Great review!
ReplyDeleteThe book series is really good. The further into the series I got, the more I loved it. I still need to see the movie.
DeleteI gotta be honest but I haven't really read any book from this series and because of your review I know now that it has a lot of high school drama (which I love..haha) and with the upcoming release of the movie I must read this ASAP!
ReplyDeleteIt has it's share of drama. And the series does a wonderful job with character growth. Enjoy!
Deletei love VA series..but the movies ? not so much...
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the movie yet. But love the books
DeleteI enjoyed the first book but didn't love it. I'm hoping to continue the series as I have heard that it does get better.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first read the book, it was good, not great. I guess my review is biased a bit on the next few books as I had read those as well so my thought concept for plot ran together a bit. It does get better by quite a bit. Especially by book 3. Non-stop from there!
DeleteThe first book was okay for me, I kind of really didn't liked it. But when I finally delved into Frostbite, I was surprised it got alot much better! The action was more badass and Rose has immediately fallen unto my list of favorite EVER heroines. I'm really eager to finish this series and am planning to buy the other books really soon. I cannot believe I'm missing out!
ReplyDeleteThis series does get better and better. I liked this one, really liked the next, and by the third I was utterly hooked!
DeleteCAN'T WAIT TO READ THIS!
ReplyDeleteI hope you like it!
DeleteI love this book! Glad you did too. I think it's solidly YA though. I dealt with much more mature issues when I was a teen and so did everyone else I knew.
ReplyDeleteToo bad they killed the movie, from what I hear. :(
Teen/Ya basically the same thing now. Go to a library, they are all mixed together.
DeleteI've been meaning to pick this up for a while!
ReplyDeleteYou should. It is a great series!
DeleteGreat review! And a really good book! I read it a few months ago and in the start I thought I wouldn't like it, but I was really wrong!! XD
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way at first
DeleteI love this book and it is one of my favorite series!! L.J. Smith is one of the best writers ever!!
ReplyDeleteLJ Smith is okay from what little I have read but Richelle Mead here blows her away in my opinion!
DeleteI meant to type Richelle Mead is one of the best writers ever I was thinking of L.J. Smith because I saw the review for the Vampire Diaries before so I mixed the names up!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Ah, okay I feel better. :) I have called people by the wrong names before too.
DeleteVampire Academy is one of my favorite series. I'm glad you liked it as much as i did!
ReplyDeleteLove Richelle Mead now!
DeleteI liked this book so much! In the start I thought I wouldn't like it but I was so wrong!! Great review!!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteMost of my friends recommended this book to me, and yeah, I agree that this book was fab. But, I don't know, why I never start to read it yet, and always skip this book for another book.
ReplyDeleteI held off for a long time too. Then once I read the first I was eager to continue.
DeleteI really love her books, including this series!
ReplyDeleteI own all the books out so far and have read them over and over again! While I love the Twilight series (the books way more than the movies) I think the Vampire Academy is so much better.
I agree. V.A is much better.More involved and dynamic!
DeleteI just bought this book, I'm glad you liked it. I've heard that the book is 10 times better than the movie (which I actually liked) so I can't wait to read it.
ReplyDeleteThe book is better, and the series just keeps getting better as you go along!
DeleteI've been wanting to read the book for forever but I can never seem to get past the first chapter but read what everyone has to say maybe ill give it another shot.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a couple chapters. Granted it is not the greatest start but it soon settles in a s great read.
Deletenot a big fan of this sereies. Bloodlines is much better! :)
ReplyDeleteI like both so far.
DeleteIt sounds interesting, but I basically don't like paranormal books. Should I start reading it?
ReplyDeleteThat is up to you. If you don't like vampires than probably not.
DeleteVampire Academy is one of my favourite series. *.* :D I love it so much, just like your blog. :D
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! glad you love my blog! :) I do believe you just made my day :)
DeleteI absolutely loved this book :) I was very disappointed with the last 3. They took me the longest to read and I just wasn't digging the whole Dimitri thing but the first was awesome! And the second and third were just as awesome :]
ReplyDeleteReally? I felt the books just got better as the series movies along!
DeleteGreat review. I still need to see the movie. :)
ReplyDeleteIt was better than what I expected based on the trailer but still think the cast options could have been better. I struggle when the people on the cover look one way yet the actors look totally different!
DeleteI loved this book! The cover turned me away from it for a very very very long time. But then I found it cheap at a used bookstore and decided "hey! why not?" I found Rose and Lissa to be annoying at times but over all, one of my faves :) :) :)
ReplyDeleteI held off for a long time too. Like you I just basically went why not myself at the library while shelving them. Glad I did! Lissa annoyed me at times. Rose I liked overall.
DeleteI enjoyed this series as well, although I like Bloodlines better. I'm glad you liked it :D And I like how short and simple your reviews are. I don't like the reviews that drag on and on and make me bored by the time I'm finished reading it XD
ReplyDeleteSome of my reviews are longer. I've noticed I varied. Although over they are normally longer nowadawys than this is. Hope you still like them! I enjoy Bloodlines as well.
DeleteI haven't read this series yet. When I first saw it around the blogosphere, it didn't interest me too much. I recently watched and enjoyed the film adaptation so maybe I'll check out the books too.
ReplyDeleteIf you liked the movie, the book is even better!
DeleteThis was one of my favourite series because it's one of the few that sucked me into the world and made me want the next book in the series.
ReplyDeleteThat it does!
DeleteI loved this book! I was worried it might be cheesy or something, but it turned out to be the opposite. I loved Rose and Lissa and their friendship. I thought the world was super cool and fun to read about. I still have to read the last three books of the series and I'm so excited to get back into the world and the characters' lives. (:
ReplyDeleteThe movie I felt was a bit cheesy but the books I loved. Glad i read them first. The pace is really fast in the next 2 books for you!
DeleteYay I absolutely love the series, so glad you liked it!! I don't think that it's super mature in terms of content, well maybe the whole thing that Mia does... well, alright it's a little on the more mature side. Definitely not a MG read.
ReplyDeletelove the entire series! On maturity, I felt it was medium-high for age group. A 17 year old is fine, most likely a 16 year old fine. but say a 14 year old, maybe not so much. but all is pending reader maturity. I can think of a 40 year old that should not read this due to being highly sensitive.
DeleteI LOVED the books, well the first three since they are the only one's I've read so far. I don't plan on seeing the movie. I've only heard terrible things...
ReplyDeleteThe movie was okay. Not great but better than the trailer made it look. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
