Fantasy Creatures

2015 Discussion Challenge3

So this is just a light-hearted subject just for fun.  This is in participation of the 2015 Discussion challenge.

Today's Topic:

Fantasy Creatures

With all the different fantasy novels out there, any fan of the genre has surely come across their share of these mystical, often unique creatures.

Dragons, mermaids, phoenixes, fairies, gnomes, , unicorns, gargoyles, hybrids,  griffins, trolls and more.

Not mention the paranormal aspect:  Vampires, Werewolves, ghosts, etc.
The list is virtually endless to ones imagination.  Especially ones you get into sub-creatures (such as sexy shape-shifting dragons vs the classic firebreathing dragon types).

If you take a look at my backround, I bet you can guess my favorite creature.

That's right.  Dragons.  The classic type.  Flying, sharp claws and teeth and elemental breathing (fire, ice, electric, etc). especially.  The magic and power they contact have always captivated my imagination.

I also love some of the unique creatures various authors have created.  Often taken from another animal, yes but still.

This past year I just read my first mermaid based novel (excluding children's books) and I have yet to read a book centered on gargoyles.

So what about you? What is your favorite and why?  Or what have you yet to read about?

**Please note none of the above images belong to me.  I am simply using them as examples.

  1. I am a big fan of shapeshifter stories as I think there is just something magical about beign able to shift in a different form and experience the world in a different way. I think I have read about most of the creatures you mentioned here at least once.

For gargoyels you might want to check out Jennifer Armentrout her Dark Elements series, I haven't read it myself yet, but I know it's about gargoyels. I know I have read a book with gargoyels, but I can't remember the title at the moment.

    1. Shape shifters are fun! There are several books by Armentrout I wish to read but maybe dark Elements will be a good place to start. Two birds, one stone! Thanks!

  2. I don't know that I have a favorite, but I read The Darkest Part of the Forest not long ago and I did rather enjoy the faerie stuff! And I have read quite a few books with vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts (a really good ghost book I read was Grunge Gods and Graveyards), zombies, etc. OH, and angels! I love the Penryn & the End of Days series! That would be my favorite series with fantasy creatures, though I don't know that angels are my favorite. Probably not. Fun topic!!

  3. I think werewolves are my favorites - but really, I like them all. It takes so much creativity to build stories with supernatural creatures.

    1. Werewolves can be amazingly cool but I am quite picky about how they are done so few books make the cut with me it seems.

  5. I love pretty much all fantasy creatures! When I was a little girl, I adored unicorns, so those will always share a special place in my heart, but I love them all!

  6. I love dragons. It's a newer affection. At least since I read the series from James A. Owen that starts with the book Here, There Be Dragons. Have you read it?

    1. Vampires can be awesome, so long as they do not sparkle, lol. I like them fierce and deadly!

  8. I love a great dragon story, but I have read a lot that have been letdowns. Gargoyle are definitely some of my favorites, and I hope they become more and more prevalent in YA. The Beautiful and the Cursed is a great series if you are interested in checking out a gargoyle story. I love fantastical creatures, and when an author can come up with a new one, or a different take on an old one, and make a unique and fascinating story, I am all in! Mermaids are the one type that I just have not enjoyed. I have tried multiple times, different authors and stories, but I have yet to find one that I actually enjoy.

    1. The Beautiful and the Cursed is on my TBR list! Mermaids are one I struggle with in YA-adult lit too. Love them for childrens books but it seems like they might belong there.

  10. Dragons are my favorite too! But most of the books I read about them I don't find are that great, although I do enjoy the Pern ones. I really enjoy Patricia Briggs' Mercedes Thompson series, which has shapeshifters, vampires and fey in it but still comes off very urban.
